With four riders representing us across three classes, a new weekend- and qualifying format, combined well challenging weather conditions, it was bound to be an exciting event. With three FP sessions on Friday, one qualifying and race on Saturday, as well as one each on Sunday, the new schedule forced us to completely rethink the way we approached the weekend. With each qualifying session counting by itself for one of the races, we had to finish all set up work by the end of Friday’s free practice sessions, instead of trying last experiments in QP1. This proved difficult with torrential rain overshadowing the entire first day, mixed conditions being forecast for Saturday and a dry day expected Sunday. Despite the difficult conditions, we could make good improvements on our wet setup throughout the first day. This proved key for Saturday’s first qualifying session, as a mixed forecast proved to be another soaked day of running. We qualified in 10th for race 1, with a gap of just over 2 seconds to pole, exactly 1 second behind P4. With this good showing we went into the first race with confidence. Anakin managed to capitalize of a good start, making up three positions in lap 1 and a further two in lap 2, landing us in the lead group in fifth position. Sadly, this is where our progress stagnated and we started slipping backwards, until Anakin was forced to pull into the pits in lap 7 due to his visor steaming up, robbing him of any visibility. After clearing the issue the team sent him out again, but we only managed to fight back up to 17th position. What was a disappointing second day at the Ring only turned souwerer, as the team was noted of a “speeding in pit lane” violation during our forced pit stop, handing us a 2 long-lap penalty for tomorrow's second race. This situation was only made harder as we suffered a minor crash in second qualifying, landing us in a disappointing 16th position on the starting grid. As the clouds were blown away and the track started to dry for our second race, the whole team was sceptical of our chances for the second race. And whilst we had full confidence in our rider to give it his full efforts, no one could expect the amazing recovery ride he would put in. Another good start and strong first few corners meant Anakin came across the line in 9th position after the first lap, having overtaken 7 other riders. After serving his two long lap penalties in the following laps, he came out in 15th position and well behind even the third group of riders on track. And whilst the team on the pit wall would have been happy with any points paying position, Anakin was determined to show his pace and prove what could have been. In the remaining 8 laps, despite having to ride through two groups of riders, saw him storm up the field and into a tremendous 9th position. And despite being slip streamed to the line in the final lap, a top 10 position was still more than anyone could have imagined or expected before the race. With racing taking place in the Red Bull Ring’s infield track, the MiniGPs had to deal with the same harsh conditions as the big bikes on their Grand Prix track. Extreme wet conditions and pools of standing water marked all untimed free practice session on Friday afternoon, and continued through out all of Saturday’s practice and qualifying sessions. The tricky conditions however were no match for the three JRP riders, all of whom managed to find good a good feeling and grip, improving throughout the day, resulting in Danny qualifying in 9th and 4th for the two smaller GP-0 class races, and Anina and Ben locking out the top two positions for both races.. sharing one pole and one second place each. Sunday’s warm-up sessions went well, with Danny proving his 4th in Q2 was not a fluke, repeating it during the morning’s session, whilst Anina and Ben finishing in first and third positions, only split by the Austrian home hero. The first GP0 race got off to a good start, as Danny managed to propel his way from 9th up to 4th. He managed to hold this position of a couple of laps, before being over taken for one and then the other position in the laps that followed. At the end he came home in a personal best 6th position. His second start was slightly more mediocre, slotting in as the 6th rider after lap 1. He did get passed just before the end of the race, coming home in 7th, which was still a fantastic result for the youngster. The first of the two 190cc GP-2 races did not quite go to plan.. After getting of the pole position well and winning the first hole shot, Anina suffered a crash not long into the race. Despite this minor inconvenience, she picked herself and the bike up again, and started storming through the field and back into 4th. This is where she stated for the remainder of the race, before a final lap overtake for the last position on the podium. Ben had an equally good getaway off the line, slotting in behind his main rival for second in the championship. Whilst he tried to get close enough for an overtake, he decided to take the points for the championship and bring home a decent second place. Whilst Anina had a fantastic start in race 2, again winning the hole shot and going on to dominate the race, crossing the finish line with over 7 seconds advantage over second place, Ben’s pole position carried less fruits. An apparent clutch issue forced him to have a slow get away off the line, slotting into 5th position and having to launch a come back ride. Whilst he did manage to get back onto the podium and into third position, his lap times do suggest a better result could have been on the cards today. The final NTC round will take place in 7 weeks time, again together with the IDM at the Hockenheimring, whilst the MiniGPs only have to wait 5 weeks before emerging onto Saalfelden. With Anina leading the way by only 7 points in the championship, and Ben still mathematically in the running for a top 2 result, we look forward to what will surely be a grand final. Northern Talent Cup returns to Oschersleben - JRP ACADEMY look back on a mixed bag of results on their return to Oschersleben. With constant improvements throughout the weekend, technical issues that forced a bike change between Friday’s FP1 and FP2 sessions, an ideal lap time that could have put us on pole, a sofar best race finish, followed by a technical retirement, the last race meeting had a bit of everything. Despite a few teething issues, the team is extremely pleased about all the progress rider and bike are making and the clear steps we are taking towards the front of the grid. Anakin: “The free practice session went well and I felt comfortable on the bike. In QP1 I could qualify in 6th position but in QP2 I didn’t get a clean lap in and had to start the race from P9. I had a good start in the first race, managed to overtake two riders off the line and settled into a 4 rider group and ended up coming across the line in 7th. The team managed to find some improvements in setup for the second race giving me an even better feeling on the bike, allowing me to fight through the field into 4th at one point. Sadly, a faulty chain forced me to enter the pits towards the end of the race. My team fixed the problem allowing me to rejoin the race, but it was only enough for P19 in the end. We look ahead to round 4 with optimism as I am feeling more and more confident on the bike and Sachsenring is one of my favorite tracks. A massive thanks to my team and all my supporters!” Alex: “We had a mixed weekend in Oschersleben. On the one hand we can be very pleased as we are really making progress with the bike and the base setting for Anakin, and Anakin himself is making massive progress compared to the lead group of riders. On the other hand we just can’t seem to shake this spell of bad luck that has been following us since hitting that patch of oil in round 1 in Assen. We were making steady improvements in the two free practice session, but made a real jump forward into P6 in first quali on Friday. We had great pace in second quali as well and our ideal lap time would have put us in pole position for both races, but we couldn't get a clean lap in so only qualified in 9th overall. Saturday afternoon rolled around and Anakin showed again what great racecraft he already possesses, overtaking two riders straight off the line, fighting to keep a group of three riders behind him and bringing home a 7th position. We made a small setup change going into race 2 that proved to be another step forward, giving Anakin that little extra feeling he needed to fight up into P4 by the end of the second or third lap. Again, he had a great race and stayed towards the front of that lead group until the chain came loose and jumped the sprocket. We managed to get him back out to collect some extra experience and gather up any remains from others crashing, but sadly only came away with a P19.” Both the NTC and MiniGP teams are out again in two weeks time. Whilst the MiniGP’s have their second race meeting at Rechnitz in Austria, the NTC returns to the Sachsenring, where they will be joining MotoGP for round four of the 2023 season. Whilst the first qualifying session on Friday afternoon didn’t go quite as smoothly as we had hoped, including a crash mid session, our mechanics fixing the bike in time before the end of the session, just for us to send him out with bad timing and without a group, the second quali session on Saturday afternoon more than made up for it. Anakin surprised us all, improving his lap time by another 1.2 seconds compared to Friday and securing 8th place on the grid, just 0.6 seconds off Pole. After an average start of the line in race 1, Anie dropped to P11 by the end of the first lap, but started a good recovery fight through the field that saw him cross the line in 6th by the end of lap 2. Sadly, whilst going through the fast T12, we suffered an engine failure that meant Anakin lost drive and could not accelerate out of the corner. This sudden lack of acceleration caught the riders behind us out and caused a four bike pileup that brought out the red flag. his started our own race to disassemble the bike on Saturday evening, start reassembling it around a new engine at 10 o’clock in the morning when the pit’s opened, and get everything ready for a 12:45 start. Whilst the bike was fixed and ready in time, it soon transpired that Anakin was not going to be fit to race. After initial complaints of a headache in the morning, and further comments of general discomfort closer to race start, the team decided to withdraw him from the event on safety grounds. Anakin: “The weekend started quite good. I felt good on the bike and we could improve from session to session, finally qualifying in P8 with a 0.6 seconds gap to pole. I lost some positions at the start but could recover them in the following laps. Whilst defending P6 the engine unexpectedly stopped whilst going through T12, after the fast waterfall section. The team did a mega job to completely rebuild the bike for Sunday’s race, but sadly we had to withdraw before the race due to some health concerns after the crash. It’s a shame for the team and me, as I’m sure we had the pace for another top-10 result and valuable championship points. We look ahead and focus on Oschersleben now, where with a bit of luck we can get some good points.” Alex: “Yeah, it’s a shame. First of all obviously for Anakin who made a massive step in qualifying, and then showed that he could not just keep up with the fast guys at the beginning but actually fight through them from P11 to P6 in the second lap alone. But also for the team, who is just as competitive as the riders, putting in the work throughout the weekend just to come away with a DNF and a DNS. But anyway, the engine issues happen and are resolved for the next round, and the rider’s health and safety of cause goes above all else, so there was no debate about withdrawing from the second race. The main thing we can take out of this weekend is the knowledge that we made a good step forwards and have the chance to prove it wasn’t a fluke in three weeks time at Oschersleben. Also from my side, a massive thanks to Mario and Willi for their work this weekend, always making sure the bike was in good shape and ready for the next session, and keeping Anie calm and in a good headspace.” Whilst our NTC squad has a three week break before racing resumes at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in early June, our MiniGP’s head to the Red Bull Ring next week for their first race meeting of 2023. With Danny Hinkelmann representing us in the 160cc class, and Anina Urlass and Ben Wiegner on the bigger 190s, we look forward to an existing second season in MiniGPs. First race weekend of 2023 done and dusted at the TT Circuit Assen - The World SBK round, boasting a weekend fan attendance of almost 55,000 spectators, played host to the first race weekend for our Academy in 2023. With constant improvements, unfortunate slip-ups, and teeth gritting comebacks, the JRP ACADEMY can look back at a solid first event of the season. After missing out on a bit of pre-season testing, the team had to make an educated guess on what direction to go with the bike's setup. Luckily, in FP1 we could prove that the starting setting was a step forwards from where we left off at the official test in Oschersleben three weeks ago. With constant improvements throughout the first day, Anakin could establish himself in P14 for the free practice sessions and with further improvements to bike setting could improve upon that for a P13 in the sole qualifying session on Friday evening. Race 1 on Saturday sadly ended before it started for us. With rain setting in just before the pit lane opened, and the possibility of some oil being dropped in the previous class' session, saw us hit a particularly slippery spot on track and crash out. Rider was taken to the medical center, but after further checks was cleared to race the following day. Race 2 saw Anakin perform a blinding start, jumping from 13th on the grid up to 9th at the end of the first lap. He managed to keep and defend this position for a large part of the race, before a bit of excessive rear tyre wear and pain from the previous day's crash forced him to slow his pace and lose touch to his group. However, thanks to some other riders' misfortune ahead, he managed to bring home a fantastic 8th place finish and his first 8 points in the Northern Talent Cup. A cheerful Anakin commented: "The practice sessions were good and I felt comfortable on the bike. I could constantly improve throughout the first day and had a good qualifying at the end of day 1. We were a bit unlucky in the first race, as it started raining shortly before the race start and I crashed on a particularly slippery part of the track in the sighting lap. In race 2 I had a good start, going from P13 to P8 in the beginning. Towards the end I lost touch with the lead group as some of the pain from the previous day's crash came back. At the end I could bring home an 8th place finish though. My team did a super job this weekend and I would like to thank them a lot for that." After a two day test in Most this coming weekend, the next stop for our NTC Team will be at the legendary Sachsenring circuit, together with the german IDM championship, whilst our three rider MiniGP Team will have their first race of the season one weekend later, at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. NTC season kicks off at Oschersleben After months of preparation and anticipation, the 2023 season finally kicked off with the official pre season test for the Northern Talent Cup taking place at Oschersleben. It also marked a new chapter for both the rider, #55 Anakin Zelenak, as well as the our JRP Academy. For Anakin, one of the Academy’s longest affiliated riders, it was a big step into the unknown, having to get used to a new championship, new rivals, as well as the working procedures of a new team. Despite all these changes he managed to acquit himself very well, finish day one in 12th position and managing to keep calm despite a crash and some technical issues on a wet the second day. The young 14 year old reported: “I had a good start and felt well on the bike. At the end of the first day I managed to finish in P12 which I was happy with being a rookie. Thursday was a bit more difficult with changing weather conditions, as I didn’t have any prior experience with wet weather tyres. Sadly, I did have two small crashes and some technical difficulties, but despite this it was a positive test with plenty of track time. I want to thank my team, which did some fantastic work here in Oschersleben and always managed to fix the bike and get me back out on track after a crash.” Team Manager, Alexander Josefson, described the test as positive with room for improvement: “I think we can leave Oschersleben with a smile. We managed to try some different ideas on the first day and could find a clear direction to go with our setup on the second day. Despite this, we lost a lot of time on the second day with the weather and some technical issues, which was quite frustrating. Despite this, I think this was a positive start that we can build our season on. It’s clear we still have a lot of work to do, especially on setup with the bike, but I’m confident we will improve this aspect in the next events. The first round will be held alongside the World Superbike Championship at Assen on the 21st and 22nd of April. This year's field features 12 talented rookies eager to make their mark on the grid. This time the second stop of the still fresh NTC season took place as part of the International German Championship (IDM). The Motorsport Arena Oschersleben already hosted the Northern Talent Cup this year when the official test took place in April. In comparison, Luca Göttlicher could already mark a big improvement at the beginning of the weekend which was demonstrated with a strong seventh place on the starting grid. Race three of the season starts on Saturday afternoon. Originally it should go over 17 laps, but the weather gods seem to have something against it. Shortly before and again directly on the starting grid, it starts to rain. The race is now started on dry tyres, but is stopped soon afterwards due to the wet track conditions, before a restart as a 'wet race' with a shortened race distance of eleven laps. After a great first lap, the difficult circumstances also proved difficult for Luca Göttlicher. In the lead, he touches the white line in turn three and crashes. Sunday brings a friendlier picture, but today bad luck interferes. Immediately in the early stages, an incident occurs in front of the German, forcing him to slow down and finds himself at the back of the field. From 22nd place, "Lucky Luc" storms forward after laps with impressively constant low or middle 1'37 times and has already reached position five in lap six. There he fights with six others for the maximum 4th place. The places in the group are constantly changing. In the end, the young German achieves 8th place, although more would have been possible without bad luck at the beginning. The French Circuit Bugatti is new territory for Luca Göttlicher. Given that fact, a 13th place on the grid in the field of 25 riders after Friday's qualifying can be regarded as excellent. After a solid start, a crash in the front field prevents the German from connecting to the leading group at an early stage. In lap two Luca manages to make it into the top 10 and soon to close the 3 second gap to the leaders. By the time he crosses the finish line, he managed to move up to eighth place on his own, gaining another position after the race thanks to a penalty for a competitor. „We had a very good feeling in the first race. After we lost contact to the leading group due to a crash in front of us, I was able to find good pace and catch up with the leading group again. Unfortunately I used quite a bit of the rear tyre for that, so it ended up being 7th.“ It was even warmer on the final Sunday. The high temperatures make the initial position difficult. This causes grip problems on the rear from the start and made the race more of a struggle. In the end Luca was able to more or less hold his position and finishes 12th. „In the second race we had difficult track conditions, with air temperatures six degrees higher than on the rest of the weekend and even more extreme track temperatures. Due to the high temperatures, my rear tyre overheated and I had no grip almost from the start.“ Combined, that adds up to 13 championship points and a satisfying ninth place in the standings. The Motorsport Arena Oschersleben played host for the official preseason test for the 2022 Northern Talent Cup season. In all, twelve sessions were completed across the two days of running. For Luca „Lucky Luc“ Göttlicher a new chapter begins as he joins the JRP Junior Academy Team. New team, new bike and lots to set up work to be done before the season opener in May. We used the first two sessions to run-in the new engine, before moving on to getting Luca comfortable on the bike and finding a base setup. Despite some technical gremlins preventing us going for a time attack, Luca ended the first day of running in 18th position with a lap time of 1’39.6. Following his positive adaptations to the bike and good steps in bike setup, Luca was able to fully focus on his feelings with the bike and managed to improve his lap time by over a second. Noteworthy in that was that he set his fastest lap towards the end of a 15-lap-long race simulation, which he even led for a while. In combined times Luca finished on a solid 15th place overall at the end of the day and reduced the gap to the fastest to around 2.5 seconds. Supported by our JRP Academy, the 16 year old Hungarian rider got the opportunity to compete for the GP Project Kawasaki team in the world Super Sport 300 category. Outperforming anyone’s expectations, he managed to improve both his lap time and positioning session by session, culminating with a P17 in Saturday’s Superpole qualifying. Due to some understandable nerves and getting caught up in other peoples incidents, Máté dropped down the 44 rider field to finish the two races in still very respectable 34th and 32nd positions. Számadó commented on the weekend: “Being able to compete in Most and race against the best of the world was an absolute dream come true. Thanks to JRP Academy for their help getting me here and giving me the opportunity to show my potential on this stage.
